What Personality Does Your Home Express? What Color Studies Reveal

CertaPro Painters of Pasadena explores what your home's colors reveal!

We all just want to be happy…right? People do everything they can to seek happiness if they haven’t already found it. What makes people happy? What things in common do they share? Who would have thought that colors would come into play in determining people’s mind states? Recent color studies find that people tend to pick different colors to describe different moods; though they pick other colors, regardless of the mood they’re in. Let’s take a closer look at what’s been found.

Feeling gray? The color studies revealed that those plagued with depression or anxiety associated their moods with the color gray, as those who were happier chose yellow.  Seems to make sense. Because pointing out a color on a spectrum is quite simple to do, this method can be used with patients who have trouble communicating and children alike. Color can act as a language in place of asking patients a series of questions. Not surprisingly, happy patients chose bright colors while depressed patients chose darker colors.

These Color studies can help build happier homes, too.  When it comes to house paint colors, worry less about trends and what others would like, and more about how the wall colors affect you. First, determine what mood you’d like to set in each room, and what hues best achieve that mood. You can use anything for ideas—magazines, decorating books, etc; or, perhaps you really like the fabric on a piece of furniture. Once you’ve found your match, don’t use more than three or four colors in one room.

Here’s what further color studies say about different hues for the home:

  • Red=energy! Use it for a room where you want to draw people together and spend time at night; however, it’s not a great color for bedrooms.
  •  Yellow=joy. It communicates happiness and freshness. Use hints of it in kitchens, hallways and bathrooms. Stay away from covering walls in bright yellow.
  • Blue=relaxation, calming.
  • Green=restfulness
  • Purple=rich, dramatic, sophisticated
  • Orange=excitement, enthusiasm, energy
  • Neutrals can be used to give depth

It’s easy to forget that ceilings take up a large amount of space in the home; and white isn’t the only color that works for them. Use this space to create an optical illusion of sorts with color. Darker ceilings can make them seem lower, creating a cozier room, while lighter ceilings can create more space.

Ultimately, color in the home will give it vibrancy and personality; and color studies show that it can set the mood too. For additional tips on painting and choosing hues, go to CertaPro Painters corporate website.
